Several core classes are taught by teachers who do not care to teach class, arts programs are high achieving, little to no diversity in students or staff. Incredibly anti-lgbt students, administrators do not punish students for hateful speech. Strict dress code.
I think the student/teacher base needs a more diverse and accepting tone towards people in different communities. There were a few situations where LGBTQ+ kids were not seen or heard, where people of color were profiled, and where situations were extremely biased based on student's connections to the people in charge. This created an environment that mainly benefited the kids of direct connection to the administration. It left the other 75% of the school without proper attention and care due to the administrations main concern being on the small number of kids they cared for. The school is in a small-town Southern environment, which is likely to hold racial prejudice to begin with. I found that kids from lower-income and less fortunate backgrounds were assumed to be wrongdoers and always put to the side. Many of these kids lacked work ethic due to teacher's being unwilling to understand their at home difficulties and mental hardships.
With great teachers and a safe environment, I would give GVISD 5 stars any day. The district has a private school vibe. Great teachers, great education, great band program, and great people!
