Garden Grove Unified School District has a very diverse population and for the most part, everyone is accepting of other’s cultures. Because of this diverse environment, a student can always find somewhere to fit in and learn about other cultures as well. Teachers can care a lot or not care at all. The best teachers will have an impact on you for the rest of your life while the worst will leave you suffering for just as long. I’ve had many great teachers and met great staff who truly care for the students’ education and well-being. GGUSD, although has a good foundation, needs to build upon student needs and requests. Problems of harassment and bullying are sometimes brushed over, severely hindering the safe environment of schools. A lot of times, school is a safe place for a student, and when you can not follow all of a student’s needs, there needs to be more effort in creating a better educational environment for students. This can include more funding towards clubs and sports.
I genuinely feel very grateful and privileged to have gone to school in the GGUSD for my entire life. I have been to 4 schools in this district, all of which prepared me for my future. I do believe students have to take charge of their education, BUT (big but) they cannot do so without the resources, and academically, GGUSD definitely provided the resources. I know my experience is personal, but I had excellent teachers and programs/classes that were consistently enriching and made obtaining knowledge so enjoyable. With this said, however, I cannot deny the obvious issues that are outstanding. There are clear differences among schools that I have attended, i.e. PHS and RAHS. I attended RAHS my freshman year and PHS every other year. It is obvious that PHS receives greater resources and academic care (by students & faculty). I know that it's easier said than done, but the inequality between different regions of GGUSD is far too great and work should be done to reduce it.
What I would like to change about the Garden Grove Unified School District is a new program that can reach out to students to encourage them to explore these mysterious fields of study that are offered in most colleges. When applying to the college system, as I was scrolling down the lists of majors to select to study, I was clueless about the vast field of different studies. I believe we should include guest speakers, informational events, professionals, etc. to walk in and inform us students of these different opportunities to ensure the best of our futures.
What I do like about this district from my time from elementary up until high school are the teachers. I have had an amazing time with the teachers that have taught me. Not only do they teach me the subjects within the class rather well, I have also learned much more than merely just the contents of the class through these great teachers.
