Being a student at Ball High School as given me many opportunities to open up and look at life realistically. Being apart of the Ball High Band and becoming drum major was one of my senior highlights for sure. It helped me connect with fellow classmates and relate to them as well as build a trust within our band and learn to appreciate each others time and presence. Even with the hardships that came with being drum major, i still would not take away my position for anything because i have worked so hard to earn my position and I couldn’t feel more proud of what i have accomplished. Having the underclassmen look up to me has been one of the most heart touching parts of my parts as a leader. I would wish that the communication overall with the band directors and other leadership students was more clear and that we could find more ways to connect and bring the band together. Overall i’ve loved being apart of Ball High Band and i would recommend to any other incoming freshmen to join 100%.
The educational system overall was very flakey. Something was always changing and I never experienced a consistent schedule, counseling, administrative lead, and quite a few other things all throughout Highschool specifically. I wasn’t given a lot of resources or help like I know other districts have provided, and even though I graduated top of my class and got into a great university, I was not prepared adequately enough for college or given enough information about what I was getting myself into. But overall I have learned through it and am enjoying this experience, and was given a lot of experience in many subjects that prepared me for the real world as a whole. GISD and Ball High specifically are great, just need a lot of work in the smaller places.
In Galveston, there is only one public high school, so unless one is willing or able to pay for the private high school, they must go to Ball High School. In my fourth year at the school, I have found things I love about the school and things I disagree with. For one, I love the programs that are offered at my school. Being right across the street from Galveston Community College, we have access to dual-credit classes that are payed for through the Galveston Career Connect program. Because of this, I will be graduating with 59 college credit hours with no money out of my pocket. They also payed for me to take an EMT program. However, since there is a large number of students who are not intrested in school and like to skip class, start fights, make threats, and do other illegal things like smoke in school, the rest of the school has to suffer. We have very strict and somewhat unreasonable policies in result of these students behavior.
