Because Finneytown is a small school district, I can be involved in band, sports and academic leadership. I am able to take many honors and AP classes, and my counselors helped me enroll in college credit plus. A few of my teachers are highly invested in their students, and are excellent educators. The building and facilities are old and in disrepair. The food is average. There are sometimes problems with fighting and drugs, and kids having sexual relations on the school premises, but these issues never reach the media. I think my school is representative of most schools in the area.
Ive been there since kindergarten and graduated in 2018. It is small and has a good amount of support in the community. In the schools you will find that 90% of the teachers are engaged with teaching students and life lessons. Many of them have been offered positions elsewhere but wanted to stay while others want to share their experience. During my senior year Finneytown started the housesystem which further helps students get involved have fun and become a community through competition. The housesystem taught me lessons on camaraderie and leadership. As seniors the lower classes looked up to us and I’m glad to have been able to make friends with people that I otherwise wouldn’t have made. Sure our school isnt Wyoming or IndianHill in terms of money but community engaged teachers and a safe place to learn and make friends is finneytown.
I have been living in Finneytown my entire life. Everyone gives FT a bad rep but honestly, I wouldn't want to go to any other school. We are now on an honors system to boost integrity and accountability for students and also a house system. Look it up if you don't know about it. Some of the sports are absolutely stellar and others have had a losing streak year after year. It is out of my control, but I contributed to the athletic FT community as much as I could. Our school is probably the most diverse have ever seen at around 50% white and the rest minority. We always welcome foreign exchange students--which we get a few every year. We are very safe. We do have a school officer who patrols the school every day and we do random drills to search for drugs (rarely do we find any). Now that I am a senior and this is my last year at Finneytown, I feel like the teachers and the students finally have become like a big family. I am so proud of my FT family.
