There are two high schools in the Erie City School District. One school, Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy, which is a college-prep school that prepare students and allow them to take AP and college courses. The other high school is Erie High School, formerly known as Central Technical School, which offers courses that involves training and hands-on experience for certain careers including, nursing, engineering, physical assistant, and others.
The Erie School District has limited options for high school students. They provide two schools. Erie High which operates as a general public school with magnet schools for specific interest such as robotics, and culinary arts. The other high school Northwestern Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy operates like a charter school (which it is not) with public money. It does have a magnet school for visual and preforming arts. It provides a college prep education which is great but the culture is very restricting and the diversity among the students, faculty and administration is poor. The school doesn't reflect the larger community that it is a part of.
In my years at the Erie School District, specifically Erie High School where I go now, I've had a very touch and go experience. Some of the teachers here are amazing, and they really want to help you succeed. Some are extremely lazy, poor inspiring of any work ethic, or are so used to dealing with bad kids that people who are trying to succeed get railed for minor things. The police officers in the school, while welcome, almost make you feel like you're in a prison system; don't do much to stop the fights that seem to break out all the time. Unusually strong feeling of being threatened outside of your friend group. Interacting with others just seems off-putting. The school's quality is beyond low. Ancient heating system means we go the summer without air conditioning/most of winter without reliable heat. Bathrooms broken/regularly dirty, there was a bed bug problem. Parts of the building are just falling apart.
