I first moved into the East Penn School district at the start of my sophomore year. There was an immediate sense of discomfort when I attended the school starting with the comment, "Oh well we have diversity, but not Allentown diversity, " made by one of the administrators initiating that Allentown is too "urban." She then proceeded to compliment my curly hair immediately after to save the embarrassment. Since then the school has given me no sense of comfort being Latina in a white-dominated school. Not only is the staff close-minded, but the students are just as vile. Emmaus needs more "Allentown Diversity."
They say they care about us, but then make us go to school when roads/sidewalks are icy, don't have enough snow days and don't allow you to have much of a life because time is spent doing hours of homework. Also, although PA schools are not being penalized for not doing 180 days this year because of the coronavirus, EPSD is making us go to school on April 9, which we were supposed to have off. Some of us actually celebrate Easter for religious reasons, and clearly EPSD doesn't care. Plus, the "anti-bullying programs" are pretty much nonexistent. Their definition of "anti-bullying" is telling the person or people doing the bullying to stop bullying, which is useless because they continue to bully and the schools don't do enough to stop it. Here's more: Emmaus High School clearly doesn't understand that if they want us to be interested in learning, they need to make the learning interesting and stop giving us piles of homework.
Emmaus High has changed me for the better. They give you a sense of independence while still getting guidance. Emmaus is a great place to transition from middle school because as you go up in grades, you go up in the size of the school so it is a good jump. It also has many students from all types of backgrounds and several clubs to get involved in as well as sports. The only thing I would change is, they either need more guidance counselors or some way to get more focused on meeting with students more regularly. One meeting every two years is not enough, especially when students are trying to make decisions on what they want to do for the rest of their life.
