I have had the opportunity to attend 4 schools in the Duval County school district. My elementary school and middle school experiences have provided me with an amazing atmosphere that fostered creativity and learning. I would, however, change my high school experiences. The first high school I attended was the #1 high school in the state! It wasn't the overwhelming stress that got to me, but rather the teachers and administration. The number of unnecessary confrontations and pressure to be better was genuinely off-putting. I transfered after 2 years. My final two years of high school were the most beautiful years so far. Duval County has many issues, whether it be scandals or insufficient funding but it has also allowed me to become the person I am today.

I am currently an employee for Duval County Public Schools system. I would honestly say that the real challenge that I experience working in public school day to day is the level of students which struggle financially. This struggle creates learning barriers for the students. My guess is that parents and/or guardians are preoccupied with making ends meet for their families, therefore there is very little to no time left to invest into the student academically in the home. As a result, the student struggles to keep up in the learning environment.

I love how Duval County Public School System, holds small group instruction to the uttermost importance as a part of its daily routine. As a Paraprofessional, I work hard daily to bridge the learning gaps that occur for various reasons within the students lifestyle. I get to see firsthand why the District pushes so hard to offer small group instruction in addition to normal daily curriculum times. This is definitely a strength.
I've spent time in other school districts around the country, and DCPS is the most proactive and resourceful that I've had the pleasure of attending. Amid the COVID-19 panic, they have maintained students as their top priority, still preparing us for end of year testing and Advanced Placement testing. They have been very adaptable with online education and ensuring all students are able to access the online resources required to finish their courses. The administration cares about both the teachers and students alike, ensuring their safety and overall wellbeing throughout the year. DCPS is a fantastic school district and I am thankful for the resources they have provided to myself and other students.
