Detroit Public Schools District is a wonderful school system with the upmost potential to be better, although it can be much better. One issue is that there's not enough money within the school district to give the children everything that is required. Being an alumna from Cass Technical High School, we had a great advantage being the best school in the district. We had funds coming in from sports to help fund other programs, which brings me to my next issue. Many schools in the district don't have the funding to carry out as many sports programs to invest in the children's dreams. Being a black person, I know that sports is a way out of a situation to most students. A lot of my associates came from unexplainable situations and were lucky enough to have the access to sports like DPS does. I do know that depending on the high school you attend in Detroit, determines a lot of futures. Honestly from inside Cass Tech, the system looks spectacular, yet it's not the same for everyone.
I would say that Detroit students are on the rise because of the Detroit Public Schools Community District. Our superintendent, Dr. Vitti and our school board allows students of our district to voice our concerns and make sure we are heard. I attend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School where our principal allows students like myself to shadow her. She allows our school to be student-lead. She also built a culture that is family-orientated. The students and faculty builds close bonds throughout the 4 years there. I would say, that joining the King family is the best decision I made!
After moving from KY, I attended Cody High School for my junior year. I had a good time at Cody. I liked my guidance counselor and teachers: they genuinely cared about me. Also, I enjoyed getting to know new students. While some students are rough, others are nice and responsible.
For my senior year, I decided to attend DPSCD's Virtual School, which is separate from other schools in the district. While I thought Virtual School would go well, the year has started badly. The virtual school has problems with communication and organization. As I'm writing this, we are on the third week of school, but our classes are missing teachers.
I hope that DPSCD improves their virtual school soon. Otherwise, I believe that students can succeed here if they put in the effort.
