I've spent all four years of high school at DA, and there are certainly pros and cons to the rural school. Firstly, it's one of the premier small schools in the state in terms of athletics. We have incredible football, basketball and cross country programs that were all highly ranked in the state. One of the side effects of being a small school with good athletics is the lack of clubs. Yes, there are some, but almost everyone in the school participates in multiple sports. Academically, the school is meh. There are some good teachers, and then there are teachers that can't spell "astronomy." Seriously. The fact that it's the only school in the area means that often you will be in classes with kids that aren't on your academic level, which impedes learning for everyone. The few AP classes and lack of honors classes can make it harder to stand out in competitive college pools, but it is definitely possible to challenge yourself academically at DA.
Delaware Academy is a small school that helps their students reach their highest potential ! The high school guidance counselor helps each student as an individual when searching for college. I had the guidance of my parents, but she made sure all of my paper work was sent out on time. Although we have been accepted to colleges, we are still encouraged to work hard in school daily. There are many scholarships that are given out at graduation. The monetary awards are given out fairly. It’s important for the school to make sure all of the students that deserve awards get money towards college. This I personally feel is how the school is supportive of everyone at graduation. Some students choose the work force, a year off before college or to go right into college. You are never shunned for your choice and that’s important ! It’s important because college is not for everyone. The fact that you are graduating is the first step, and then what you want for your future will follow.
My experience at Delaware Academy, in upstate NY has been enjoyable. I have grown up in this district with warm, welcoming peers and staff, which has made it all the more pleasurable. The teachers at my high school are fantastic people who really care about their students. Our athletics programs are great as well, and our coaches really push us to do our best. My involvement in our Cross Country team have given me some of my closest friends. We do have a very small school-I have 45 kids in my class, so it has been difficult to find my place amongst my peers. Another thing I wish our school had was a greater span and involvement of our after school clubs. Some things are focused on more than others, so the latter get left out and isolated. If the administration encouraged more student involvement in a variety of clubs, I'm sure our community would become even closer!
