Decorah pushes you to try anything and everything. This can be really great way to get students involved in something they are passionate about, but it can also lead to students spreading themselves too thin. When you are told to be a 4.0 student and a varsity athlete and an all-state musician you can begin to feel not good enough at everything rather than finding a passion in that one thing you are most connected to. That being said, if you are motivated by pressure this is the place to be! A teacher/coach/director is always trying to get you to improve yourself. The atmosphere is intense, but it can pay off in the end.
Decorah schools allow you to take college courses in high school, which was very helpful for me. The majority of the teachers care about their students and are inclusive. Sports would be better if the didn’t give teachers first priority as being coaches. I had a terrible experience with one of my favorite sports because of the coach that was also a teacher, multiple others had problems with this coach as well.
During my time in Decorah, I have been surrounded by a supporting and accepting environment. The students there are all very kind and I haven't had a negative relationship with any. The community is also very accepting of those in the LGBTQ+ community which, while I am not a part of, is something that I believe is important for a community to be accepting of. Overall, I loved my time there and I would be happy to return to visit in the future.
