Great community spirit, but terrible sex ed program and whitewashed history curriculum. Could do much better about implementing anti-racist history curriculum and including education about queer identity and consent in health class. Specific teachers of health have also mocked mental illness and made light of drug use. Daniel Boone also has a WILDLY unreliable guidance department and no consistent mental health resources.
I graduated from Daniel Boone ASD in 2019, my experience there was unmatched. Daniel Boone employs teachers who genuinely care about the well being of their students, the curriculum was challenging enough to prepare me for my education at PSU, all the while providing a safe space for social growth with a multitude of extra curricular activities allowing every student to find something that suits their interests.
Classes were challenging, but not too difficult. They prepared me for college and gave me knowledge that some of my fellow college students didn’t know. The high school was very open to the LGBT+ community and had a GSA. The one thing I want to improve is their lack of care for mental health. The guidance counselors focused more on college preparedness than the students who needed help. When I reached out about being suicidal, my parents were simply called and I was sent home and there was barely any checking up on me and they didn’t help me get more help outside of school.
