I think that the Blue Valley Unified School District located in Overland Park, Kansas is a fantastic school district. It gathers people that come from all different communities and welcomes them with open arms as they embark on a new adventure. The academics and sports are amazing truly. Some of the best in Kansas! I attend Blue Valley North which is known to be the best school in Kansas. I hope this opens your eyes to see why Blue Valley is such a good district.
I have been a Blue Valley School District student from kindergarten-12th grade. Overall I have loved being a part of the school district, and feel like I have been greatly educated and well prepared for my academic journey ahead of me. The many resources available to me and technology I have been provided with in the past years has greatly helped me succeed academically. I do wish that our high school counsellors had better provided me with college information, especially scholarships. I have been the only person in figuring out college choices and applications, as well as scholarships. I feel like I have missed out on a lot of scholarship opportunities because I was never presented with any information about them and that makes me feel overwhelmed. I also wish Blue Valley was less focused on appearing woke and more focused on better improving the well being of their students, but overall is a good school district.
My kids had experience with Olathe and Blue Valley districts.
In Olathe, kids are invited to participate in accelerated math program based on their grades, test results, and teacher recommendation. No additional effort is required. My son was part of this program. This class went deep and moved fast. My son transferred from Olathe to BV in 9th grade, he was one year ahead of all advanced BV students (who were two years ahead of peers).
BV does not offer a special class, but allows the child to jump one year. From social-emotional and learning perspectives, this approach is inferior to the high-achieving class of peers. To participate, the children starting from 2nd grade should pass a test. The test takes three hours; it is done in one attempt with no breaks. High school students who did ACT/SAT know how hard it is to keep attention for 3 hours; here it is done to kids age 8-12. After this experience, my conclusion is BV district discourages high-achieving students from advancing.
