Going here feels more like a surreal gateway to college rather than a high school experience. That's not to say that it's bad, the education is good, it's just that competitiveness and blandness go hand in hand here. The hallways are incredibly small and when I say that kids are packed in between class periods, it's inhaling-the person's-shirt-in-front of you packed. 0 school spirit to be found except for in athletics. Most of the time you are a robot focused on academics and getting your stats up. There's little inclusivity, no ideals being driven home, and definitely no life lessons or experience to be learnt other than gaining the skill to teach yourself topics if your teachers aren't the best. You won't feel connected to the other students very much, and you won't feel connected at all if you're a minority (the majority of the school is white/asian). No emotional support except through friends- again, the entire experience is just about getting your stats up.
Ridge is very academically strong and emotionally challenging.
Academically, the classes are challenging and there is a wide variety of choices that a student can choose from depending on what they are interested in. Students often remember information for the test and then everything tenaciously studied for goes out of heads. Some teachers try to engage students, but others feel that it is the students' own responsibility to be interactive in the class.
Emotionally, Ridge High School has improved by making counselors and support more available to students. However that it has been to the point that at presentations welcoming the grades back from the summer, the last slide contains a suicide hotline prevention center. I applaud the school for making the changes needed to prevent past tragedies from happening again; however, I believe a more effective method to encourage students to reach out for help when needed.

There is an emphasis on academics and on athletics. If you are not a high achieving AP student or a star athlete, then be prepared to be miserable.
