My experience with AVUSD has been exceptional! I have been to 2 schools, both apart of AVUSD, Sitting Bull Academy (pre-k to 8th) and Apple Valley High School (9th to 12th). I have experienced so many life changing events, along with that I have never felt bullied, attacked, or any feelings other than this is my home. I have found a huge love for education and have strived to maintain my own personal academic goals.
In the Apple Valley Unified School District, there is a culture of complacency and lack of encouragement for students to challenge themselves and achieve greatness. Counselors and administration simply do the job of making sure students graduate with a GPA that allows them to earn a high school diploma and attend the California State University of our county. Rather than urging students to work hard so that they could potentially attend prestigious universities, staff attempts to instill in students to be satisfied with less.
Even though AVHS is a fairly large public high school, the truly caring staff, very helpful counselors, excellent teachers, devoted sports coaches, spirited students and the approachable administration contribute to the warm "family feel" within the campus. The academic and extracurricular opportunities are limitless and each student can find his or her own niche easily. Admittedly, I always had ambitious dreams for my children and had planned on giving them an "elite" private school education "down the hill". But what I discovered is that my children can get an equally excellent and more importantly, well-rounded and challenging education right here in the High Desert without an "elitist" price tag or attitude. Thank you AVHS for your high quality of support and standards!
