I have two sons at this school in the Magnate program. The teachers and administration have been wonderful and looking out for my kids in every situation. They are all going above and beyond. In truth, the biggest problem with the school is the fact that so many students are passed to middle school with extremely low reading/math abilities. This isn't highlighted in the statistics many parents rely on. So in fact, the teachers enter each year with extreme challenges and each day it is about being there for those kids to see what might be done to help. I love that they are there to help my kids, but also that they are dauntless in the face of such a large trench to dig. Its easy to dole out a reputation based on numbers or make judgements based on diversity, but is it wise?

I am in the Chinese Magnet Program. I am happy with all of my teachers at Crystal Lake except Ms. Su, the Chinese teacher. She is hard to understand. Since she is the only Chinese teacher at Crystal Lake you have her all three years. Not only does she teach Chinese, she teaches your Social Studies class. Double whammy. So now I have to deal with this woman for two out of six classes and I sit there thinking, what is she saying??? Take Spanish or French instead!
Y’all i o here and it’s a good school, kinda. Their magnet STEM program is AMAZING. You actually learn so much from the teachers. All the teachers do care about you and giving you a good grade. You’d have to be really stupid to not pass a class. But the downside is, the kids here are absolutely terrible. I’d you’re like me (black) you automatically fit in of course but the students experience colorism on a daily basis. If you’re light skinned black you’re favored by EVERYONE and ur dark skin u get treated like dirt unless ur super popular or on a sports team. If you’re well known here’s this doesn’t apply to you but crystal lake is really a hostile place and being popular is extremely overwhelming and can stray you away from what really matters, your grades.
