Covington Latin School is a co-educational middle and high school that offers a unique program for academically talented students. As its central purpose, CLS aims to form Christian leaders by challenging its students to attain their academic, intellectual, social and moral potential. The school's commitment to acceleration allows advanced fifth, sixth and seventh-grade students the opportunity to learn in a safe environment with like-minded peers. For many of these students, acceleration offers a more challenging and rewarding educational experience than a regular grade process. Admitted fifth-grade students are eligible to enter either the Prep 7 year or Prep 8 year. Admitted sixth-grade students are eligible to enter either the Prep 8 or Freshman year. The decision to accelerate one versus two years is based on a joint determination between Latin School and each prospective student family. Admitted seventh-grade students are eligible to enter into the Freshman year.

Going here was probably one of the biggest mistakes I’ve ever made. My freshman year, everyone was optimistic and enjoyed the school; the teachers were amazing and helpful. But after that year, there was a massive overhaul of the faculty and only one of my favorite teachers remained. It’s been entirely downhill since. People break down nearly everyday, crying from the intense workload that we’re given no break from. Many of the teachers act like they don’t want to be at the school just as much as we don’t. Finally, the addition of the prep 7 year was a HUGE mistake. As a senior, I feel like I go to a middle school rather than a high school, as 10 and 11 year-olds may be admitted to the school. Overall, although my time at CLS might have taught me how to do 6-8 hours of homework a night, it did not give me ANY of the experiences normal high schoolers get.

Fabulous school! It is very small; but gifted students thrive here. It isn't for everyone. If you have a bright student, please look at this school. the teachers are fabulous and teach like a college professor. Homework is demanding, but these students will get into a top college. The religion program is also top notch. The students attend mass weekly and have the opportunity to serve for the bishop. The acceleration and grade skipping is perfect if you have a student who is bored in a traditional high school. My daughter loves going to school and for the first time is not bored. The students help each other succeed. There is nothing like a CLS education!
CLS is not for everyone. But if your child isn't afraid to work hard, and wants to be well-prepared for college--even without having to take "AP" classes--this is a great place. The current administration is the best the school has had in the 12 years I've had children there. While it may not have all the sports and extracurricular activities some larger schools do, they field competitive teams athletically and academically, without the drama common in those larger schools. The teachers are genuinely caring and communicate well with parents. But most importantly, every kid at CLS who would be in the top 10-20% at any other school--your bright, maybe nerdy, child won't be "weird" here, and can thrive surrounded by similar kids.
