From Clayton Valley Charter High School
Clayton Valley opened to students in 1958 under the leadership of inaugural principal Dan Della as part of the Mt. Diablo Unified School District. In 2011, a petition was submitted to convert Clayton Valley into a teacher-driven conversion charter high school. After a series of steps, the Contra Costa County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the charter in January 2012.
Clayton Valley Charter High School opened in the summer of 2012 and continues the long and proud tradition of its predecessor. CVCHS currently serves more than 2,200 students in the East Bay Area and provides students with many unique programs including our dedicated academies, EAGLEi independent learning program, career pathways, and more.
CVCHS’s mission is to provide a positive, student-centered environment in which all students will be challenged academically and develop the skills and mindsets to graduate as successful, lifelong learners and productive, responsible citizens in a diverse society.

My experience at CV was one of the best! I loved every second I got to have there and every memory that came with the school. Each year I was challenged academically to push myself to do more. It made me realize how much I can do and see how far hard work can go. The teachers do their best in making sure every student gets the chance to get a good grade and learn. The teachers are some of the best parts of the school. Getting to go to my classes I knew I would always get the opportunity to learn. I had the privilege of getting a great education at Clayton Valley, and now have the confidence of going to college.
This school felt to me like a microcosm of America, or the American ideal: “immigrants” transferring from schools all over the east Bay Area could come here with the intent of succeeding and reinventing themselves anew. I was certainly among these. Where I’d felt imprisoned in certain identities and highly restrictive social conditions in my two previous high schools, Clayton Valley welcomed me with open arms, allowing me to create and explore to the dregs my own identity. I will forever be grateful to the school for that, and there is (or at least was, in 2017) something uniquely special about the school in this sense. Everybody from all different backgrounds and grade levels could and for the most part did coalesce here with little restriction. Of course there are social barriers and stipulations everywhere, but here, they felt just a little bit more dissolved than other schools, and certainly more than the work world. Things were more open, people were less afraid, and thus, kinder
Coming into Clayton Valley I expected more from their overall school. What I mean by this is seeing their Instagram posts it made it seem like the school was full of fun and happiness as well as strong academics. However, now that I attend this school I would say it is the quite opposite. The bathrooms for one are a hazard considering the dead bugs and broken stalls with no soap. The teachers are good however they’re short staffed. The school in my opinions has way too many students considering its quite small space. They need to fix the brunch and lunch situation because people shove and it’s a struggle to get through. However the ASB is now more active and making things more fun by adding activities in the quad. Another issue I have is the lack of spreading word of clubs and encouraging them. They also don’t show any interest in sports other than football. Despite the negatives, I will praise the faculty and school ASB club for making things more exciting this year than last.
