At the time of writing, I am a current Junior at CHS and I have loved every second of my time here. The academics are definitely the school's strong suit; they offer a wide range of classes, including regular, honors, and AP. While the classes can be a lot to manage all at once, students often know this going in since most overwhelmed students are the ones who signed themselves up for these tough classes. The students here are very ambitious and aren't afraid of taking on challenges. They are also very involved and the vast majority of students are involved in more than one extracurricular/club. Although it can get stressful, the counselors here are available and willing to help. I haven't had tons of exposure to our college counselors yet but I can tell that they work hard at what they do and I am confident that I am in good hands. The food here isn't the best and neither are the sports (not the most competitive/successful). However, the sports atmosphere is improving.
The teachers that I have had have been excellent. Most go above and beyond to ensure that students are performing well in their classes, and doing well emotionally as well. Many teachers also work hard to incorporate inclusion and other equitable practices to ensure that their students feel safe and comfortable in their classes. Additionally, the range of classes provided is really great for a public high school. The only bad experiences I have had involve students, and not all teachers are the best at handling bad or interruptive behaviors from the students. Use of illegal substances has also been an issue which I wish was addressed more seriously, such as the use of vape products and weed. The school also has a social climate that promotes high standards, and not always in a positive way. Other than that, I have been very happy with Clayton.
For the years I’ve been in the Clayton high school it has been an amazing experience. I used to go to a private catholic school, and it was bad. In 4th grade I moved to the Clayton district and the difference between the two were major. Clayton’s academics itself are just something to be amazed at. It really challenges you and I think it really prepares you for college. But I also love all the teachers. Both in elementary through high school. I could tell that they were all so happy to be teaching and that they genuinely wanted to help everyone learn, which is great. But what I especially love about Clayton is the different opportunities. There are so many fun electives to choose from for example art, forensic science, photography, culinary, and much more. Because of all the options I feel like I have the chance to explore so many different things I’m interested in. If your considering Clayton I say do it, because from my experience it was totally worth it because I learned so much.
