As one of the few students of color attending Clarkston High School, I have a unique perspective of the culture at my school. I have seen a large celebration around our sports teams, which has assisted the toxic yet stereotypical, social hierarchy. Students who have found themselves in Tier A popularity look down greatly upon those in tiers below 'B'. This typically includes anyone who does not fit in the cis, hetero, white, male norm and reflects the values demonstrated in peer-to-peer relationships. Those outside the norms are largely disrespected through demonstrations of mass and low-key bigotry. I wish Clarkston students and parents alike were more open-minded and upheld a better interpretation of Clarkston's core values.
I finished most of my credits early so my last two years were full of really fun classes, however with COVID my experience was stifled and incredibly stressful. The Clarkston virtual curriculum is awful and entirely focused on taking notes from an online book that isn't used in the in person curriculum meaning you aren't getting the same education. The virtual counselors were also quite obviously unprepared and/or untrained to help students with academic issues and were essentially only available to take rolecall. I'd like to see Clarkston hire virtual counselors who are actually familiar with the material given to the students who can assist with teaching the student as opposed to just wiving assignments that they don't understand.
I thoroughly enjoyed my three years spent at Clarkston High School. I made great friends, feel prepared for college, and learned a lot during my time there. One thing I wish I would have been able to do would be to have more freedom over my schedule and the classes I take. I don't see the point in being forced to take classes that I know I won't get anything out of. My counselor was very helpful throughout the college application process and even offered to write me a letter of recommendation which was greatly appreciated!
