From Chicago City Day School

The Chicago City Day School is an independent, coeducational, urban elementary school serving children in junior kindergarten through eighth grade. The School sees as its mission the preparation of students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and aesthetically to participate in a changing and increasingly complex society.

The School develops each child’s intellectual abilities in a nurturing environment. To this end we offer an academically challenging program in a cooperative school climate in which children are encouraged to take risks.

Our purpose is to prepare students to achieve academically at a level which is commensurate with their abilities. Through traditional curriculum we seek to enable students to be successful in high school and beyond. Through active, positive, and mutually respectful interaction among their peers and with their teachers both in and out of the classroom, our students will be prepared for active, positive participation as members of society.

Service Learning at Chicago City Day

As part of our Service Learning program, students help restore the Cook County Forest Preserves and collect data about the quality of the Chicago River. Each summer, a group of students spends a week in the Bahamas doing coral reef and habitat assessment aboard a Shedd Aquarium research vessel. We inspire students to take action and give back to the world!

Chicago City Day School is a gem that nurtures its students academically and socially to achieve the very best education in the classroom, on the fields and in any endeavors they choose. All children focus on "public speaking" and begin to deliver presentations in science fair, speeches and arts performances from k-8 grade. It's all part of the well-crafted, unique and deliberate philosophy of the school. "If you can't stand up defend your ideas a great education does not have the value it could". Students are kind to each other and no one is left out. Lunch tables are changed regularly and no one is ever faced with having to make a choice about where to sit at lunch and the school strongly encourages all to be invited to birthday parties etc. The very best part of Chicago City Day School is the community of parents, teachers, and staff that the school fosters. When the kids graduate they are completely prepared for high school and lifelong learning.

Our experience at Chicago City Day School has been excellent thus far. Each year just gets better and better (5 years To date and counting). My children are happy, enthusiastic learners that love going to school. With a low student/ teacher ratio, their personal needs are met. From the hands on learning to the close knit community of parents the school has met and surpassed all our expectations. It gives us the feeling of a small town environment while living in a big city. We have full confidence that our children will be prepared for high school once they graduate.
We have had nothing but the most positive experiences at CCDS thus far. It has exceeded my expectations, even in kindergarten. My child's schedule included science, art, drama, music, gym and foreign language four times a week on top of the reading and math they do in their homeroom. I would describe every teacher we have experienced at this point as attentive, kind, engaging and dedicated. We are very happy with the curriculum and the school atmosphere as a whole. I feel that my child is cared for not only on a scholastic level, but as an individual. It's like family here at City Day and that is something my child thrives on. I think every grade has taught developmentally appropriate material and I love that technology is used to supplement the teachers' curriculum, not used as a teacher itself. They get enough iPad at home! City Day is a place my child feels like they belong. As a parent, having a happy kid who is receiving a stellar education is all I can ask for.
