I started Catlin Gabel in 7th grade, with deficient skills, and at this remove, it is clear that I was dyslexic. However, the small class size with excellent teaching, taught me that effort could changes the game, and learning is great fun! I was graduated 54 years ago, and have enjoyed this pleasure, learning next at a fine college and on throughout my life (so far). What mattered was that Catlin’s culture respected learning and this applied to everyone at the school; the teachers in 7th and 8th grade changed my life. By graduation we could to recognize when there was a question, ask the question, pursue the answer and then sit back and reflect critically on the process – maybe try again. I still draw on this and the important core knowledge in mathematics, science, and humanities offered us at Catlin Gabel.

Catlin Gabel is an outstanding school. It has prepared me well for a college in the top 20 of the country, and provided me with outstanding academic, athletic and extracurricular opportunities, rich experiential experiences, and lots of support in every facet of my life as a high school student. I am a current senior in the Upper School and while tuition is high, the value truly is there. Recently, the administration and the heads of the different academic departments have been making big changes to the curriculum and increasing the quality of the programs with feedback from parents, students, and faculty alike.
Catlin Gabel is a truly special place!
I have been attending Catlin Gabel since I entered in Middle School, and all the people I have met have been entirely welcoming and generous with one another. The teachers are highly invested in their students, and are willing to go to great lengths to support them through their academic process. It is a spectacular environment filled with bright and motivated students. The school, however, like the rest of Portland, has diversity issues and is predominantly white, and this translates to minority community members feeling marginalized.
