Catlin Gabel is an outstanding school. It has prepared me well for a college in the top 20 of the country, and provided me with outstanding academic, athletic and extracurricular opportunities, rich experiential experiences, and lots of support in every facet of my life as a high school student. I am a current senior in the Upper School and while tuition is high, the value truly is there. Recently, the administration and the heads of the different academic departments have been making big changes to the curriculum and increasing the quality of the programs with feedback from parents, students, and faculty alike.
Catlin Gabel is a truly special place!

Catlin is a progressive school with rigorous academics. It's perhaps less progressive than it claims to be—the "verbal equivalents" are really just letter grades by a different name, and don't seem to serve any purpose. However, the administration is open to hearing students' opinions, which is nice. My greatest complaint is probably the price, but the outrageous sum that students' families pay doesn't actually cover the cost of tuition, so I guess there's not really a way around it. Catlin has a pretty great community and as a senior looking back, I wouldn't pick any other school in the Portland area over it.
I have two students who currently attend Catlin, both of whom joined during their middle school years. Having grown up in the Portland area, I had many preconceived ideas about what to expect. When I toured the school and saw for myself how completely down-to-earth and friendly the staff and students were, my mind was completely changed. Both of our kids have thrived at the school and appreciate the small class sizes and the ability to really connect with their teachers and other students. The focus is on the achievement and growth of students and not grooming them to attend a particular type of college. The staff genuinely cares about each child/teen. The teen years are always challenging and I feel fortunate that we have had the wonderful staff at Catlin to help guide our kids through these important years.
