I feel like my experience at Castle High School was very unique compared to other schools on island, and even possibly other schools throughout the nation. My school is very diverse racially, socially, and economically. There are many students with many different racial backgrounds that go to my school. Along with that, many students come from complete different ends of the social class spectrum. We have students here who live in state-issued housing, we have students who live in million-dollar houses, and we have students who are homeless. I feel like this diversity has given me opportunities to see and understand the lives of people who are different than me. I am friends with students who have been through the foster-care and adoption system while I am also friends with students who own more than one car. This environment has kept me from being sheltered from the harsh realities of the real world, and that is why I like my school.
While I've enjoyed much of my time at this school, I do have some complaints. One, the school is quick to fit you into boxes. In the middle of your freshmen year, you choose an academy, which decides what treatment you get. Medical students get the best field days, more trips, better activities as if they're 100% all going to be doctors. The engineering pathways get access to special internships, jobs, and other opportunities. There are clubs only certain pathways can join, like DECA and HOSA. The arts and business academy barely get any opportunities because they are 'just the artsy kids.' Also, the admin never listen to the students and brush them aside (even laughing at student concerns). Other than that, the students are usually nice, you can start your club easily, and the theatre program is really enjoyable.
Castle High School, despite its limited resources, provides its students with a well-rounded education. Many students are from low income families and are still provided with knowledge needed to succeed post-graduation. Castle’s academy/pathway based learning offers students classes from specific career fields in an effort to help students explore possible career opportunities.
