Dayton region's only to earn the Shaw Award 2020

The Ohio Academy of Science awarded Carroll HS the Harold C. Shaw Memorial Award, its highest honor, for the 2nd time in 3 years at its Virtual State Science Day. Our students presented their STEM research projects virtually, but that didn’t stop them from adjusting their presentations to earn the highest rating of superior and additional students earned the second-highest rating of excellent.

Carroll has excellent academics. I was well prepared for college as I was taught how to research and format essays properly. Unfortunately, it felt like the administration was too concerned with the marketability of the school and poured more money into things like sports and the house system than having working facilities. Nepotism wasn’t uncommon and certain students were treated better than others when it came to disciplinary action. They described people who had premarital sex as used up pieces of trash that no one would want to love, and had student leaders sign agreements to “remain pure.” I don’t think I need to explain why this ideology is bad, especially when coming from a catholic school that claims to value love, understanding, and forgiveness. My mental health suffered here and they weren't understanding when it affected my academic performance. It felt more like a mini totalitarian state than a highschool. The education wasn’t worth years of psychological damage.

I am honestly thankful every day that my parents sent me and my siblings to Carroll. I think Carroll set me up for success in college in multiple ways. First, of course, through the great academics. As an engineer, I am particularly grateful for the unmatched STEM program at Carroll and the wide variety of science courses. Additionally, by working hard in and out of the classroom and being motivated by great faculty and coaches, my Carroll experience gave me the confidence and reliance to thrive in college.
Our four children have all been Carroll HS students - three are graduates and one is a senior this year. We've been most pleased with the excellent academic education they have received. Additionally, our children have benefited greatly from their experiences as athletes and their involvement in other co-curricular activities. The faculty is second to none and the Carroll community has been 'home' to our family.
