When I arrive at school, I happily rush into the building, longing to brighten the school’s dreary ambiance. I pressed the espresso machine's start button, a whirring noise begins to roar as the pump warms up.

As I make an espresso, my mind joins the scent of the espresso as it floats through the air, and fills the room. I realize the impact a simple espresso machine had on the school environment, Carmel Cafe - Carmel’s nonprofit. This Cafe has brought students together, as they will work there for service hours. It has promoted a newfound sense of community and camaraderie among its workers, students, and staff. With this simple espresso machine, my friend and I founded the Carmel Cafe to help students from low-income backgrounds. The proceeds from its drinks support these students and help make their attending Carmel affordable. Without it, the purpose and mission of the Carmel Cafe - spreading goodwill, a positive attitude, and helping others - would not be possible.

I thought that Carmel helped prepare with my writing skills in really pushing me to use different techniques of writing. The school provided up laptops which helped me get used to using technology more when it came to computers. However, there are areas that Carmel could improve on, though I have heard that they have worked on this, such as diversity. When I attended school there the student demographic was largely white but now it is to my understanding that they are now accepting international students. When it comes to the school's STEM program there is still some more work to be done since it was not added in until a couple years ago.
I love Carmel because it is a community. We all work together for the greater good, and I couldn't have asked for a better school. There have been some controversies in the past, but overall, Carmel is a school that truly cares about each and every student. When one person struggled, it was felt by the whole community, who worked together to lift them up. The faith at this school is amazing. I feel like Carmel has made me a better student and a better person. Although the Christian service can be overwhelming, it is ultimately very rewarding.
