Cardinal Newman School Reviews
Overall positive experience. This from a non-catholic Christian point of view. Religion is one of the differences that separates Cardinal Newman from other schools around it. Everyone goes to a full mass service together every week and Theology is a required subject for all grades. It’s a supportive community once you get integrated. Good opportunities for extracurriculars like sports, music, drama, and art. The facilities are practically brand new, with full sports fields, science labs, and a media center. There are a lot of different and unique elective classes available, as well as foreign languages. Teachers are willing to help students if asked, and the student guidance offices are always open to help with both coordinating with teachers and offering help and support through rough times. There will always be teachers and classmates you dislike, but issues can usually be solved if you try hard enough.
Cardinal Newman lacks consistency with its extracurriculars. Clubs change from year-to-year, so it is very difficult to stay involved with a club all four years of high school (which shows dedication on college apps). Clubs are for the most part poorly managed. Even the service clubs like National Honor Society and Key Club do very few projects, and the ones they do hold are not participated in by the majority of the student body. It's sad because this is supposed to be a Christian school, but the kids hate service unless its fun, such as the dance marathon, which does raise a lot of money for children's hospital. Many of the leadership positions in the clubs are taken by the same people via the typical popularity contest type elections, which happens at most schools, but its very bad when this happens at a small school like CN because there are so few to go around. It's very difficult to start and organization, and students don't, only teachers can. Sports are good, but tend to be more important than academics (no matter how much the school claims they aren't more important). Music and art programs are SERIOUSLY lacking compared to public schools--no money being put into them! Band kids receive little instruction, it's like a mashup of random instruments. Visual arts teachers are wonderful, but don't have the resources. Drama program is very popular, receives a lot of funding, but a lot of the drama kids complain that the same people get the lead roles in every play, and it's also heavily female..take that how you will. Religious organizations are actually quite good if you get involved in them. Chaplain is a bit feisty, but some programs like Retreat Team and Kairos are well-run. They also don't exclude non-Catholics from participating.
Cardinal Newman is a great school! I love how close knit and comfortable i feel. Everyone seems to know everybody, and even the teachers know all of the students. I really enjoy having two free blocks as a senior, which allows me free time to take care of all my college applications, senior project, but still have a social life! If I could complain about one thing at Cardinal Newman, I would want to change how they charge money for everything we do. Cardinal Newman is a private school, so we have to wear our uniform everyday. Certain days we are allowed to "dress down", but at a cost of at least $5! To me it is insane because our parents pay money for our tuition, but we still have to pay for dressing down. Other than that I love my school and have great pride for it. I have attended CN since 7th grade and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else for high school. I love my school and will truly miss it.
