I am now becoming a sophomore at this school. I believe that this school is perfect for more academically oriented people who are willing to challenge themselves. Because the scheduling is double the speed as other schools, it can be difficult for some to adjust to the fast-paced learning and homework load. However, the teachers are very professional/great at teaching, and the community is very supportive of each other. I would argue that the school does not have as much school spirit as other nearby schools, but I have yet to experience anything bad yet! There are also conservatories at our school, something unique to only CCA. The arts/film/dance conservatories are amazing and quite well-funded.
CCA is an incredible school filled with welcoming students, dedicated teachers, and programs that allow students to pursue their interests like they couldn’t at most other schools. I’m so glad I chose it over Torrey Pines!
It is easy to overcommit at CCA, but there were a few avenues that I wish I explored more in my time there. Students have to put effort into staying balanced when scheduling classes and activities outside of school. Don’t feel like you have to take as many or as few APs as your friends! Also, ideally, your time outside of school shouldn’t be dominated by extracurriculars you can never miss - extracurriculars should be used as a way to have fun and enjoy yourself outside of school to avoid staying at home and doing nothing.
CCA kids are definitely nicer on average than those at Torrey Pines (source: TP kids). With very few outliers, teachers at CCA love their jobs and will be great resources and friends in your time there (and after)!

CCA is big, with 600+ graduating class, so do not expect the individual attention bestowed to every student as you would expect from a private school with 100+ graduating class. CCA is exceptionally strong at STEM. CCA students routinely garner national awards in the STEM fields. Athletics is also excellent given that this is an academics-oriented school (tennis comes to mind but no football, which may be a good thing). Envision Conservatory is a unique program giving an outlet to students who prefer to pursue arts and humanities rather than sports during after school time. Just like anywhere else, students developing extraordinary talent in a specific field need to work outside (often independently) of the school-sponsored activities. Counseling can be challenging, so making a good connection with the counselor(s) early is key. Overall, CCA is the flagship public high school in the county of San Diego.
