The two stars is very generous score in my opinion. I would say Cannon School was riddled with racism, classism, and elitism. Most of my time there I would have to witness my friends of color suffer from intense racism, discrimination, and implicit bias (from teachers and students alike). I myself experienced severe homophobia from my fellow students, which caused severe ostracization and lack of enjoyment in the classroom. It was not until I came to college did I realize that not everyone was homophobic! When I tell my friends from college about my high school, they look at me like I have two heads.
Furthermore, the social ranking of this high school is incredibly classist. If you received financial aid, looked slightly less than upper-class, or did not subscribe to a certain material culture: you were going to have the worst high school experience. Not to mention that many students with wealthy backgrounds "got away" with severe violations because of their parents influence.

My experience at Cannon School was very fun. There are so many wonderful things to do here - the campus is gorgeous when the sun's out, our student community is very lively and driven, and I like how Cannon has many resources for students in all areas - academic, personal, extracurricular, and more. I think that Cannon School could improve on some things - like our tutoring program - but the good thing is that efforts are already being made to improve that and other things. Cannon School is constantly changing for the better, and our students are top-notch. It's a great place to be at.
I will only give this school three stars due to the quality of education in the English and Language Departments. Other parts are lacking. The U.S History Honors instructor in the Upper School is disorganized, rude and unprofessional. She forces her views upon her students and has no concept of how to run a classroom in an orderly fashion. The administration prefers to sweep issues under the rug, treating parents as if they are belligerent and unreasonable when they voice concerns. Their is a toxic culture among the students as well. If you want your child to grow up in an insular environment with students of average intellect who won’t challenge their way of thinking and you are expected to blend in then this is the place for you! If you have a gifted child who is above average then you will find that this school is subpar and far below the standards of Charlotte Latin or Country Day. If you want an education that is worth 23,000 a year please drive to Charlotte if you are able!
