I am a current sophomore here, and I can’t think of a single place where I would feel more at home. Despite not having the most impressive academics, being about average with test scores and having a poor Talented and Gifted program, it is a place that feels like home, even for people who recently moved here. Here we have a robust athletics program, with very passionate coaches and administrators allowing our teams to succeed. Music too, has flourished under great leadership. We boast the largest concert choir in the state, and our band has been very successful recently. Despite lacking strong school spirit, we do have a strong and generally supportive school culture, the people here are for the most part friendly and accepting. Our teachers are also generally very supportive, and most (not all) genuinely care about their students, teach effectively, and interact with their students positively. Overall, I’m happy to be here, and very much looking forward to the next two years here.
Canby High School needs to better train their teachers on mental health. Almost all teachers are knowledgeable and know how to counter the cause of mental health problems, but some teachers subconsciously make it harder and don't understand why a student does something or why they didn't do something. It is unfair to mentally challenged kids to have any teachers that don't understand the effeects of their actions. I would like to say that most teachers are caring and will do anything to make sure we are learning to our maximum potential. Also, school activities are vastly underfunded and sports only recieve 500 dollars per year for dozens of students. Thanks to the community we are able to raise enough to have very successful sports programs.
I think Canby high school could use better mental health resources and programming in general. I would also appreciate more conversations on race dynamics within our school. The choir program is the best and deserves more money. Also, the theatre department should get a full-time teacher. Go arts!
