My daughter's love of learning is supported and nurtured at Dunn school. She has developed close relationships with her teachers and is growing rapidly and broadly because of the opportunity and support afforded her. The proficiency based system and student focused approach works exceedingly well for her. She is curious, a fast learner and advanced in her core subjects. I am aware that in a more traditional school system she might spend her day just sitting in class, learning to not get in trouble while the other students learn. Customizing learning for 1 little girl might be seen as inconvenient, and perhaps unnecessary since she is already advanced in reading and math. I am grateful to have found a place where she can still go to school and learn, because it is what she really loves to do. The programing is excellent and the school seems to be continually improving.
There are many after school offerings. Some are free like Destination Imagination and Kayaking. Others have small fees to support other activities. After school "Dunn Fun" days are $5. a day, students play physical games for 2 hours after school twice a week. The money goes toward the 4th grade overnight trip. There is a Spanish club my daughter participated in for a small fee that the teacher donated to the Patriot Parents- the parent organization. After school art, music and theater classes are offered for a fee paid to the instructors. I have found them all to be very well implemented my daughter finds them fun and wants to go, and is clearly gaining skills. She attended a writing camp over the summer put conducted by one of the teachers that was absolutely phenomenal. The teacher crafted a program that allowed the to learn and genuinely enjoy themselves. They went on walks and wrote outside, on the last day the kids read their work for the parents and had their work published in a small book. The teacher put on a slide show of their experience - you could tell that she took pride in her work and truly loved her job. Overall my daughters favorite extracurricular activity is Destination Imagination.
They seem to address health issues appropriately. They offer flu vaccines and dental treatments, eye exams etc. for all students.
Overall, I couldn't be happier with the Dunn school. The educators I have got to know are passionate about their work and the school has developed a personalized learning approach that seems to be working well. It is proficiency based, yet the focus is still on the students, not just test scores. Last year I had concerns about the validity and the time requirements of the Smarter Balanced testing, I was able to opt my child out easily with one email and she was able to participate in alternate activities. I felt my wishes and concerns as a parent were respected. There is a positive school culture that is very student centered. They have a lot of after school programing that supports well-rounded students; art, music, drama, Destination Imagination, Mad Science, lego robotics, physical activity before and after school. Many of the activities are free and very innovative. Free before school physical activity programs to support student learning throughout the day for example, and a free weekly after school kayaking program in the fall. They are very resourceful, the school is located in Pineland, which is beautiful and the student are able to use their gardens, farms and pool in their academic programing. My children's experience there has been overwhelmingly positive.
