We have had two boys go through the school starting in pre-K. We are stunned, absolutely stunned by the academic rigor of the school. It is very easy to (sort of) for a school to identify top level 8th graders and see them graduate at the top of the class. It is far harder to identify outstanding 5 year olds. What we have seen at Brunswick is that the top end of the school academically is vastly over represented by those who entered in the early years. To me, that says that the education is excellent. I am also completely stunned that anyone would suggest that the academics of the school is not top notch and that children would be better off going to a boarding school. No school is for everyone, but if academics is a parent’s top priority, Brunswick should be a strong consideration.
I went to Brunswick for 7.5 years. I didn't realize until long after graduation how many important lessons were passed on to the students about life, society, and how the world works. I left mid-year of my own volition and the school was very supportive. I transferred to a boarding school that specialized in winter sports because I was moving onto the international circuit. Brunswick, due to it's location, couldn't accommodate my needs. When I was there the school had lots of good teachers but struggled to recruit new highly talented teachers outside of its own alumni. Athletes were doted on and while the academics were high caliber, they are not comparable to Andover, Exeter, etc. Philips has been head of school for far too long. He is personable, capable, and a skilled fundraiser but he lacks interest in developing a more comprehensive academic plan.
The best highschool experience I could have possibly asked for. Perfect in nearly every respect, with only a couple minor flaws.
