Brooklyn Technical High School is the quintessential NYC school. The largest public high school in the state if not the country. While smaller schools advertise their student-teacher ratio and other such statistics Tech holds different strengths. In my experience, Tech is more akin to a medium-sized college than a high school. As a magnet students will need adequate testing skills and prep for admission. Accountability is everything. Making friends, bonding with teachers, and receiving help demands communication skills. Like our city, you need to know how to speak up. Tech's size is a double-edged sword; while it means less individual attention, slower and less organized bureaucracy, it also means a plethora of opportunities, communities, and even academic majors! Tech builds character and prepares you for the real world by demanding self-sufficiency, dedication, and confidence. Ambitious, driven, and adventurous students will thrive at Tech. Freshman, learn your cardinal directions!
I like all the academic opportunities that Brooklyn Tech offers; I truly believe it helps prepare you for college, especially with so many resources like the college newsletters and all the guidance counselors who are there to help students with the college application process. There is an enormous number of clubs at Brooklyn Tech, and some are so specific you wouldn't even believe that a club like that would exist! There really is a club for every person. Most of the teachers at Brooklyn Tech are good, however, there are always a few that most students would rather not have. Overall, what I would want to improve in Brooklyn Tech would be the academic facilities in the school like the lab rooms, and making sure there are enough supplies for students to use while doing practical, hands-on activities.
Brooklyn Technical High School provides a different experience from what you would expect of a typical high school. Students are required to select from a list of about 18 "majors" and will spend their junior and senior years of high school taking certain courses based on their selected major. While this may seem limiting, a major only requires 1-2 specific courses assigned to students, leaving the rest of their classes essentially up to the students decision. The staff at Brooklyn Tech are incredibly friendly and helpful. Often times, students are able to develop a strong bond with their teachers. When it comes to internships, volunteering, and the college process, Brooklyn Tech provides many opportunities for their students to become involved and engaged. The students are also supportive of one another and come together during the many clubs and school events the school has to offer. There is never a dull moment at Brooklyn Tech!
