Brooklyn High School of the Arts Reviews

My experience was memorable! The best part of my experience at Brooklyn High School of the Arts was finally finding my place in life. For so long, I struggled with feeling awkward, feeling out of place, feeling like I had no voice or place in any society. However, Brooklyn High School of the Arts changed those feelings. I finally found my voice, my place, and gained confidence. These attributes are helping me to evolve into the man I want to be. I can't speak to "my worst experience". However, I will say that teachers to avoid student humiliation; refraining from belittling students as a means of giving "tough love". Effective communication will have a long lasting positive effect on children and teens.
I had chosen BHSA mostly for the convenience of commute, but I had grown to love it very much. The teachers are all very nice, but I feel they could be a tad more strict. I tend to get distracted easily, especially on my phone. So I would prefer stricter cellphone usage in classrooms. Remote learning is a nightmare, since it is difficult to see the teacher face to face. I can’t seem to get into the headspace that “this is school time”.
My counselor had been extremely helpful with setting me up with all my college stuff. However, Ms. Hunt takes care of my entire academic year, and being overstretched means students couldn’t get enough attention. My designated counselor also changed once so it had been rather confusing. Hire more counselors.
Be more engaging.

The school provides so many new opportunities that I definitely would not have received if I didn't go to an art school. Personally, as a music student, I was given so many chances of prevailing in my study without having to break my mom's wallet, which is always a big plus to me. I have never been this endlessly supported from after school teaching, free supplies, multiple bands to choose from, etc than I have been at Brooklyn Arts. As for the required courses, I can confidently say that you WILL be college ready when you leave. With great staff overall, you will not only be academically prepared but mentally, financially and socially prepared. The environment is more than accepting. I am an Afrolatin autistic and not once was I ever excluded. Although I may not have had a negative experience, the staff stresses the importance of acceptance and do not tolerate bullying. The community of Brooklyn Arts is one where everyone is a friend, you just have to take the leap to be your self.
