It is not the best public school in New York City, the school has improved a lot over the 4 years I have attended. The vocal department has two new teachers, a dance studio has been fully renovated, the reading room has been converted as a place for theater students, there is a black-box for theater students, new freshman teachers have been added, and the school is more decorated compared to when I was a freshman. Teachers, students, and staff are very close with one another, it's easy to get help with school work. I personally grew a lot from this school and have made close friends and tons of memories. BHSA is a school that is open to change and is constantly trying to improve themselves to incoming students. The only thing I hated for the most part is the lunch. Freshman year lunch was decent but it has gotten worse over the years. But the solution for that is outdoor lunch! Students with an average of 85+ are permitted outdoor lunch.
Brooklyn High School of the Arts is a school that prides itself on the co-existence of the arts and academics. At BHSA I have had the chance to view amazing visual art, listen to a very diverse and talented Jazz band, and attend almost every single musical theatre production since 2017 (freshman year). I am a part of the dance department where we meet guest choreographers, perform for outside companies like Earl Mosley's Institute of the Arts, and study various dance techniques/styles. One of my favorite memories is going to a movie premiere last minute with a few classmates. We dressed fancy took pictures on the red carpet and were surrounded by so many celebrities. BHSA is very open about the students pursuing their interests and potential outside of school. If it wasn't for my chemistry teacher I would've never gotten to visit the University of Southern California for 9 days and discover my passion for Osteopathic Medicine. BHSA has had a huge impact on my character development.
It's a great school. I've been attending for about 3 years and it has been really fun, and they've given me many opportunities. We've performed at The Madison Square Garden, The Barclays Center, and our annual school musical got picked to perform on Broadway at the sherbert festival for the second time! I recommend this school to anyone who is interested in the arts and would really like to work on their craft every day.
