My experience at Brooklyn Friends School has lasted from my first days stepping into 375 Pearl Street as a little 9-year-old to attending classes at Lawrence to my graduation. I obviously have a connection to the school as I have been here for 8 years. However, there have been ups and downs. The teachers all show great commitment to the community and the preservation and ubiquity of knowledge. They allow students to feel safe and heard. However, if you are planning on taking the IB Program, it is important to note that certain aspects of the program, you are not fully prepared for. I'd say this is fairly common in the STEM departments of the High School. I still have built amazing friendships and learned boundless information and gained a sense of self throughout my time here. The Quaker Values, although implemented in the learning and norms, are not overwhelming or all-consuming. Ultimately, this school has shaped me as a person, despite the obvious improvements that could be made.
My child started BFS in high school (now in 10th grade) and he has been having an exceptional experience. WONDERFUL teachers who care deeply about the students and their progress/success, a joyful learning environment and really friendly students. The sports teams have been a particularly great experience and the high school facility on Lawrence St is a great space. We really feel like this high school is a gem and feel very grateful that our child is so happy, academically challenged and excited to go to school every day.
My children have attended Brooklyn Friends School for elementary and now middle school. We have loved our experience at the school. The curriculum is engaging and challenging. The teachers have been suburb--caring, engaging, and have shown us they appreciate and understand our children as individuals. Our children receive so much individual attention and are appropriately challenged. The arts program is very strong, with regular classes in dance, drama, music (both choral and instrumental), wood shop, ceramics, and studio arts. There is a real focus on social justice and community that translates into the day to day classroom learning and our experience as part of the parent community. The school prioritizes social/emotional learning along with academics, and we can see the benefits of that in our children. We're impressed with the middle school's attention to social/emotional learning, as that's a time that can be fraught for many children.
