I came from Pontiac to attend this school. At first it seemed as though the other student's were too nervous to speak with me, as if they associated me with a gang, my goodness. Then I started to open up and I made so many wonderful friends. I finally had an opportunity to try out for sports teams, and actually get on them! Brandon 100 percent gave me a better opportunity than Pontiac Central could have ever given me. I'll forever be grateful for them taking me in. ❤ Thank you so much for being School Choice and letting children from around the area have the same tools for success as the rest of the state!
I grew up in Ortonville so Brandon is all I know. I feel like progressively we stop caring about the spirit which is sad because we used to be so proud to wear our school colors. I wish some teachers would be more understanding- just like every other school. There are unique things about Brandon though that I like such as after announcements our principal says "go blue!" and when you are friends with a teacher, you are FRIENDS with the teacher. Like you aren't just liked by the teacher, you are now their friend and help with the class or you are the one to always make them laugh or who they rant to. Due to COVID, not many classes were offered, but for a public school we definitely have a lot more choices and more understandable when it comes to wanting to do the class online.
Brandon has deteriorated in recent years. The newer athletics and STEM wing is in fairly good shape. However, the entire school suffers from chronic underfunding and mismanagement by school, state, and district administration. BHS prioritizes it’s athletes and high-performing students over the general student body.
BHS’s teachers face paycuts, salary freezes, layoffs, and heavy-handed oversight which create an unsustainable environment for educators. While some teachers remain passionate, many are disimpassioned.
As a Jewish, genderqueer student with mental disability, Brandon was an isolating and miserable place. Toxicity and bigotry permeates Brandon. Hate speech is prevalent and the straight, white students self-associate and ignore other students.
Brandon has, in general, failed to create an integrated community. Marginalized students are ostracized from the general school community. Brandon has a long way to go in creating an effective and accepting educational community.
