I’m glad to have gone to BHSS, and I feel that the school puts in valiant effort to make sure that their students are well supported. The culture of academics, in my class (graduating in 2024) at least, is extremely competitive. Going above and beyond is heavily encouraged by staff, and students are expected to at least try to challenge themselves. There are LOTS of clubs and ways to get involved around the community! Our sports teams are selective, but good, and always make more fun games for their supporters.
I enjoyed my time at South but I do wish the teachers were a little bit more understanding. I get that teachers put in long hours studying, planning, and teaching, and they dedicate their lives to helping the next generation become successful members of society. But unfortunately, no amount of dedication and hard work can make up for a lack of resources, support, and time. I get that teachers are forced to teach multiple classes with limited resources and materials, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t fully make sure the everyone is understanding the lesson being taught. It is difficult for teachers to give their students the individual attention they need, including me, and many of my friends that needed help. Which is why I think that teachers need more help. I do know that many teachers are underpaid and overworked, which can lead to burnout and them not putting in the full effort to teach.
The community at Bloomington High School South is one that I am proud to have been a part of. I have enjoyed my time as a panther as I attribute this to the strong sense of belonging that I have felt, and continue to feel when I walk through the doors. People are friendly, kind, and my teachers care for me in a way not unlike my family cares for me. I am grateful to have been surrounded by people that love and care deeply for me. High school is a hard, tough place because of the nature of the place-- there is growing and leaning, and anytime you have immense growth things will be difficult. However, there is beauty and love there too. South has cultivated this beauty so that I too may grow up, alight with the knowledge that I have learned.
