The school is pretty good, most teachers genuinely care about their students. There are some teachers that I can’t remember doing anything their classes and some that seem like they couldn’t care less. The AP and honors science teachers are all great, and they’re typically good about keeping the grade book up to date. I personally believe that students have a ridiculous amount of disrespect for some of the adults and the student body has way too much drama. The teachers are also excessively oblivious and/or negligent to the issue of smoking, vaping, and other activities students at the very least shouldn’t be doing at school. I’ve personally witnessed a drug deal in the lunch line and at least 2 people a day using a Juul and heard a story about tricking the resource officer into not confiscating a full Juul pod. Some will say the issues here “aren’t as bad as we joke they are” but the reality is that they are.

Blacksburg High School has an excellent range of classes and extracurricular opportunities. Many AP classes and electives are offered, allowing for students to be better prepared for college or to enter the work force after High School. Many changes came this year with new administration, some good and some bad. The cafeteria food improved 200% and there will soon be scheduled time for students to see teachers for extra help or study. However, new policies against the use of phones at all times except lunch and required use of E-hall passes are more of a pain then they are good. Sure, some regulation on phones is good, but not being able to use your phone to take pictures of the textbook or participate in online class activities is an absolute burden. E-hall passes are just the extraneous tracking of students. No hats is also a pain.
My first three years at Blacksburg High School were better than I could ask for in a public school experience. When the principal left after my junior year, it began to go down hill. New administration members are power hungry and don't seem to give students the respect they deserve. The teachers on the other hand are outstanding. Every teacher cares about each of his or her students in their classroom. The students who attend BHS are wonderful people and make the environment extremely welcoming.
