Bishop O'Dowd High School Reviews
Rating 4.19 out of 5 214 reviews
I have been attending Bishop O'Dowd Highschool for two years now, and safe to say I love it. I am involved in the theater department, have run varsity cross country, joined many and started one club, performed in school-wide events, and enjoyed every moment. O'Dowd's academics have been challenging yet engaging. I never find myself struggling in class with the resources available to me, like tutoring and counseling, and you can tell that the teachers truly care about their profession. The community is supportive and the upperclassmen in leadership positions did a great job of welcoming and hyping everyone up for school! Especially during spirit week! My favorite place on campus is the living lab where students like me get to learn about growing and harvesting produce that is later used in the cafeteria for lunches and sustainable activities like eco club. In conclusion, I'd give my high school a five out of five rating and recommend any rising freshman, or transfer students to apply!
After nine years in public school, our son asked to go to O'Dowd (BOD). Actually, he made the request in 7th grade. He was tired of students disrespecting the teacher, tired of behavior issues getting in the way of the focus of the class. We were so pleased that he and several of his friends got in to BOD. Even starting during COVID, what a difference! Our elder son chose public high school. BOD was SO much more effective with online and distance learning. Now going into his senior year, he loves school. This was never true at other institutions. BOD offers class and school spirit, a rigorous curriculum but balanced so that homework doesn't take over his life. He loves his tennis team. He has gotten so much out of the service requirement, Kairos retreat, and Close Up trip to DC. BOD provided us a discount so we could afford tuition. He has had only one substandard teacher, and she was let go. We all love the diversity of the community and DEI training. And the ethics of the school.
O'Dowd's school spirit is unmatched; everyone feels like they are part of something. Academics are promoted so that everyone wants to succeed and being a nerd is generally considered cool. Every student at O'Dowd takes at least 2 AP classes during their high school experience, and most take many more. There are countless leadership positions available, both within clubs and also within eight different senior leadership groups that focus on school spirit/involvement, ecology, athletics, social justice, health & wellness, and more. Classes are interactive and encourage participation. O'Dowd maintains a competitive academic drive while also fostering a very collaborative work and learning environment. It is not a school without flaws, of course -- the classic issues plaguing teens at this time, such as social media, drug abuse, and more still certainly exist. However, O'Dowd works harder than most schools to acknowledge and confront these issues head-on. I'm very grateful to be a dragon.
