The class sizes are not 11:1 as indicated in this review. There are generally 25+ students per class. As far as academics, the children are challenged with massive amounts of homework as opposed to classroom support. In our experience over the past 2 years, teachers do not guide and encourage each student individually as one would hope for when paying a private tuition. High school students should be accountable for their assignments, however, the teachers, counselor, or administrator take no responsibility for your child's academics and offer no guidance to improve performance. When enrolling our children at BG, we had hoped for a more focused approach for each child to ensure academic success. This is NOT the case at Bishop Guilfoyle Altoona.

The school is just straight up amazing. The academics here are very challenging and they have lots of choices to get you ready for college. The school lunches are the best in any central PA school. The sports teams are also phenomenal, the high school football team has had 5 straight undefeated regular seasons. The basketball team for boys and girls got into the state playoffs in 2016-2017 season and the girls volleyball team finished in the top 8 in the state. The administration and facility is great, there is nothing that needs to be changed about this school, it is perfect.
Overall my experience at BG was good. However favoritism of certain clubs and those who participate is evident, which can be frustrating. The teachers are friendly and will usually go out of there way to help you while making the lessons interesting and interactive. It is fairly easy to make friends although because most students have been going to school together for years they already share a close bond. But if you’re new they are generally really welcoming and friendly and you should have no problem making friends. Preparedness for college is a little hard to judge because I have not yet gone to college although I have taken several AP courses which I feel have prepared me in a small way. But other than that there could be more done in this department.
