Bayard Rustin High School is quite diverse; there were students from all walks of life. As the academics were excellent, the staff was not. The "heads" of the school were unprofessional and unfit for their positions. It seemed as though the principal and his/her supervisors were more focused on retaining the school's "superior" status than helping their students. On several occasions, the guidance and principal's office would "turn a blind eye" when they were informed of student drug abuse. Many of the drug addictions that students acquired in my high school resulted in either rehabilitation and/or death. If I were to have a child, I would not send them to Bayard Rustin High School.
Review Bayard Rustin High School
There are many clubs that anyone can join at Rustin. Students can make up their own clubs through the Athletic Director. The school is very spirited especially at Friday night football games and at the Pep Rally. The school is huge and very clean. One can pick from four different languages: Spanish, Italian, German, French, and sometimes Latin. There are many different electives. Each academic class has different levels (Basic, Academic, Honors, Seminar, and Advanced Placement). There are dozens of sports to choose from, including soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, tennis, football, rugby, cross country, track, swimming, hockey, wrestling, and field hockey. The band is excellent! There are different gym classes to choose from. My favorite experience was at Prom. There is homecoming for all students in the fall, and Junior and Senior Prom in the spring. Rustin High School has many options and opportunity to make friends and have a great high school experience.
One of the best parts about Rustin are the competitive extracurriculars, with competitive sport and academic teams, along with an amazing drama program. There are enough class choices that everyone should be able to find the right level and mix of courses for them, however some of the courses can be more difficult than expected if you are not used to certain teaching methods. This is expecially true in the higher level courses. Overall, the school has a pretty positive atmosphere and the teachers and administration are mostly helpful. The one thing I would change is making the cafeteria food better.
