BASIS Washington, D.C. is a tuition-free, public charter school serving students in grades 5–12. We are a proud part of the BASIS Charter Schools network, which has been providing world-class education since 1998.
Supported by an innovative curriculum and Subject Expert Teachers who are passionate about what they do, we help our students achieve more and go further. At BASIS DC, your child will be engaged, challenged, and given opportunities to explore.
Our middle school curriculum is designed to progressively move students toward a greater understanding of fundamental concepts in each subject. In high school, students master advanced content at an accelerated rate while working towards their educational goals and preparing for college. At every grade level, we give students the tools and resources they need to succeed.

BASIS is very academics focused and although it can be overwhelming at times, it has helped me develop time management skills and taught me how to allocate my time effectively. At BASIS, I have developed into someone who can focus on long term goals and make decisions to better prepare myself for colleges. BASIS offers lots of AP classes, which is a huge advantage in allowing me to explore and find out what I might be interested in studying in college. Despite the vigorous classes, the actual school building is pretty small and since BASIS DC offers 5th-12th grade, at times I feel stuffed, dampening the environment at BASIS. I think BASIS should work on more effective communication because often information about things like when grade reports are going out differ from teacher to teacher. By making sure that accurate information is shared with everyone, the school can run more efficiently and students will have a better understanding of the things that are going on in school.
I joined Basis DC in 5th grade. I absolutely loved it during middle school. The teachers, the extracurriculars, and the curriculum was very interactive and fun. As I proceeded to 8th grade, leaning into 9th grade, the staff and work became less enjoyable. The work was hard of course because that’s how Basis works but it became no longer fun or interesting. In 9th grade, a lot teachers left Basis to pursue other opportunities but it was also in response to the person in power. I’ve heard stories, not sure if they’re sure, that the staff and the lack of organization made teachers leave Basis despite loving the students. Once those fantastic teachers left, Basis hired poor performing teachers that lacked drive or dedication to educating children. My 9th grade year was very stressful because of the inconsistency at Basis. I am an extremely intelligent and academic adequate student but my hope in myself dwindled because I didn’t have teachers that didn’t know how to help me shine.
BASIS DC is an academically challenging 5-12 that more than prepares students for college. The classes offered are significantly above the rigor of other schools, this, meaning AP exams beginning as early as middle school.
My favorite part of the school is the responsibility with which students are given. High school students are allowed to leave campus for lunch and explore the downtown DC area. In addition the school is small enough so that high school classes have been together for years and are tight knit. Great School, would recommend.
