If you are looking for a great school that challenges your children academically, and motivates them to be the best they can be, then Basis Manhattan is for you.
Our children are in their third year at the school and have learned more than their peers in comparable schools, out performed our expectations, and have enjoyed doing so.
Not only is it both academically challenging and rewarding, but it also has a caring, considerate culture lead by outstanding teachers.
It is a small school with small classes so this necessarily limits the clubs and sports it can offer. So if your life revolves around sports and extra curricular activities - and you can't find them outside of your school - then you will most likely deny your children the best education, at the best value, available in NYC!

Pros: range of normal families who are not uber-wealthy. People here want a good education for their children.
Cons: the school claims it is accelerated, but it is a school where worksheets are king, children start to feel evaluated by grades and numbers in kindergarten, there is almost no racial diversity, "deans" exhibit unconscious bias and senior management is too focused on the demands of the PE firm that recently acquired the school to manage untrained "deans". There is almost no opportunity for intellectual creativity/diversity because the dominant question is how your child lives up to the worksheets.
The school's has great goals and the teachers seems to really care - but key members of the administration do not know what to do if anything happens that is outside the prepackaged binder of worksheets that they live by.
Starting our 3rd year at Basis Manhattan after leaving a G&T school. Advanced curriculum w/ clearly expressed/ supported expectations, w/ an internationally competitive curriculum. Was skeptical of the 1st sales pitches, but am amazed at the kids’ level of learning. After-school clubs are increasingly varied, inc. competitive sports clubs. Clear/frequent communications, w/ many opportunities for feedback. Teachers are required to provide student office hours-a great support. Return rate is high; the few I know who left either wanted a more progressive education or the kid couldn’t handle the level. Very happy w/this school.
