Barrie School Reviews
Rating 3.86 out of 5 21 reviews
Barrie has an open community with a lot of flexibility and realism in its academics. It’s also quite diverse with students from Maryland to Afghanistan. The facility is extremely qualified with most of them receiving a top education and having years of experience. Yet, Barrie remains a bit on the downside when it comes to diversity in the faculty. There have been moments when it’s difficult to connect with teachers because of the lack of diversity. While Barrie has attempted to help with that problem, there hasn’t been enough effort. There’s also been a pattern of inconsistency when it comes to disciplining students. I’ve seen multiple times where students take advantage of the teachers and be disrespectful. The inconsistency lies in the harshness of the repercussions as there isn’t enough time to be given for an investigation. While there are quite a few problems to fix at the school I still can’t ignore the amazing memories I’ve made along the way.
The Barrie School is a very diverse high school in terms of the student population. The diversity between faculty and administration is definitely lacking. Since the staff is not very diverse students of color often experience many microaggressions. The school's academics are solid because they have a creative curriculum that uses a project-based learning approach. The student-to-teacher ratio is quite small which allows students to truly get one-on-one attention if they need it. Since the student body is so small the school is not great for socializing and activities. In terms of college prep, they have a specific college counselor that helps students with the college process throughout their high school career. The school offers a program called "extended study week" where students can travel locally or abroad and learn about different topics.
This is my second year sending my 2 kids to Barrie. Although no schools are perfect and this year in particular is extremely challenging for parents/kids with Covid, the school has done an extraordinary job organizing safe and effective, in-person learning. And it has made an incredible difference for my kids and for our family. The school leadership is phenomenal and their communications has been above and beyond... just the "push" but interactive and engaging meeting we have had as a school-parent community. I am paying out of pocket for this school, and private education is not cheap.. but it's worth every penny... each of my girls has 2 teachers, small class size, access to a beautiful outdoor space, emphasis on their social and emotional health and well being (shout out to nurse Kirstie and counselor Maddison!) I hope I can keep my kids here for a long time! Finally, this is a high "value" school choice. Community is chill and not snobby, people are friendly & progressive!
