A student's experience at Austin High depends heavily on the level of classes he/she takes. If the student takes advanced courses and is part of an established academy then the student will have better teachers, resources, more focused peers, and will be encouraged more frequently. Overall, the administration is incompetent and teachers are overworked and underpaid. The school is heavily segregated--white students are often given the benefit of the doubt more often, are encouraged to take more challenging courses, and make up the majority of certain academies. The school, however, rarely addresses issues such as racism, sexism, sexual assault, ableism, and xenophobia on anything deeper than a surface level. I have had some exceptional teachers at Austin High and have had the privilege of receiving mentorship, but the systemic issues the school has are clear in the day-to-day life of the community (or lack thereof).

Austin High, where everybody is somebody; everyone is definitely somebody and finds their niche at my school. There are a variety of groups and clubs to join to feel part of the school. From Tea Club, to Adventure Club to the lacrosse team or the rowing team. I love that my school allows each student to express themselves by giving a voice to even the minority group of the school, the special needs students. Including them in pep rallys, student council elections, and special events. In addition the I loved being in the Academy of Global Studies. It allowed me to learn about cultures around the world and locally. The academy also provided me the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica and Thailand, countries I may not have visited otherwise.
Since I’ve been here,I have meet some welcoming people and staff! My counselor is my best friend and I can promise you I’m not the type of person to tell my counselor anything but Ms.nix is the best person I have ever meet! When I first moved here I thought people where gonna be silent to me but my no,I actually found nice people to talk too.
