After recently graduating from Hannan, I say with confidence I am disappointed with my experience. The main issue I hold is the constant sexism from the end of the Administration. As a female, we were taught if by some chance we were assaulted at school functions it would be our fault (due to the clothes we wore) and the staff would provide us with no help. This teaching not only made me but other students fear for their safety. Instances similar have occurred all through my four years attending. The administration has only proved to promote a sexist agenda, targeting young women. Mindsets like what is held by AHHS administration only further a culture of victim-blaming young adults for instances out of their control. This only makes survivors fear telling their stories in the event someone (like AHHS admins) blames them for their experience. As an adult, you should aim to protect your students, not blame them for their trauma. We need to do better at protecting the youth.
The stars that Hannan is getting from me is for the phenomenal teacher and students that I have had the pleasure of meeting. Overall, Hannan is exactly what you would expect from a private Catholic school-expensive, excessively traditional, sloppy with finances, unorganized, and underappreciative of their staff. If I had a dollar for every teacher that left Hannan at the end of every year as a result of the poor pay and unfortunate administrative environment, I would almost be able to afford to go here again. I'm sure that a lot of people would find Hannan to be a safe and comforting environment, but if that person is at all discouraged by an administration focused on sports and appearances, they might just have to hold their nose and come up for air at graduation. And God forbit that the student isn't straight, Catholic, White, and male. Oh, and they need to invest in a bigger parking lot before they get themselves a fancy new terf soccer field.
I like the tight-knit community because it has allowed me to make friendships that I hope will last a lifetime. There are also amazing opportunities to take Honors, AP, and dual enrollment courses, and I feel that they have prepared me well for college!
