I am currently a rising junior at American High School and it's safe to say American has both its pros and cons as a high school in the competitive Silicon Valley. Personally, American High School has truly impacted the way I think and communicate with individuals because of the atmosphere I am in. Students are constantly communicating about their grades, exams, colleges, extracurriculars, etc. American made me very aware of the fact that in order to succeed I would have to do my very best, academically and socially. But with the academic challenges, there were the rallies and spirit days that made school much better. Most of the students that you will find at American will be very focused, hardworking, and driven.
The biggest con towards American would be its poor mental health due to the competitive environment students are in. Most high schools in the nation today are facing poor mental health conditions in classrooms as well.

My experience with American High School so far has been life-changing. Entering high school was always a fear of mine but American High School has removed that thought and made learning a fun process for me. I enjoy the cultural diversity of the students and faculty, the academic and athletic competitiveness and overall ambiance of the classrooms and school. Some changes I would recommend are enforcing stricter behavioral policies to ensure student safety on and off the campus and creating a stronger network between teachers and students so learning is a mutual experience before attending college. As I have two more years left in high school, I hope to continue to enjoy the opportunities American offers me and have a great life beyond high school as well.
I would say one of the greatest things about American High School is the diversity and the student body. There is a great mix of cultures, economic backgrounds, ethnicities, and perspectives. This makes for lots of great learning experiences and valuable relationships in school-associated extracurricular activities. The downsides are definitely the teachers, they're very hit or miss and often they can be very bad. Additionally, the counselors do little to help you and your mental well-being. At the same time, there are some amazing teachers who can really bring clarity to your dreams and passions in life. In the end, AHS is really about how you as the student engages, because things won't come to you. You have to really seek it, which is a good and bad thing, but mostly good.
