The school has strong STEM, English, and Social Studies departments overall and lots of AP classes that are taught by passionate teachers that prepare their classes adequately for AP tests. The infrastructure of the campus is old and run down. The number of students far exceeds what the school is zoned for, making arriving on time for class subject to traffic for many students, and making restrooms a nightmare worsened by constant vandalism and uncontrolled vaping. Students and event coordinators make efforts to create a positive and inclusive environment, starting social initiatives that flicker out by second semester. The Performing arts department is focused on fostering a fulfilling and well-rounded education in their respective arts. They emphasize student leadership and autonomy. Drugs are a problem; there are not enough supervisors to quell it. The administration is lackluster, slow acting, and beside a few counselors, seems to prioritize checking boxes over student interest.
The school is very large and diverse, at least compared to where I have been. The student body is overwhelmingly negative. We are uniquely racist, homophobic, and hateful in a way that appalls most adults. However, you will also meet some of the best people you have ever met here. The teachers here are amazing, especially for AP and Honors classes - they support you, are amazing teachers, and overall could not be better. You feel well prepared for college, and there are lots of AP classes available and more getting added all the time. There is a focus on sports, which is annoying if you are not into that, but it is pretty cool if you like it. It is definitely safe. The administration does what it can, but they have a tough job. The facilities are horrible, especially considering the age of the school. It is definitely a great public high school in relation to the rest of the country but there are a few really bad qualities about it.
It has a spread out campus, the staff makes sure that all students are accounted for at all times. The resources for some of the arts departments like theatre are not at par with some of the other schools. The safety at this school is very well maintained with at least 2 police officers perpetually on campus. The music department has just received funds to improve, so I expect growth in that department , and the general academics that this school offers is among the top 80% , due to all the AP classes offered, and more than 7 counsellors that can be contacted by the student at any time.
