I left AIMS for another school this school year, it really isn't for everyone. You will never have to worry about your children coming into contact with drugs or alcohol at AIMS and it’s an incredibly safe place. I would recommend staying here until freshman year of high-school but after that it becomes not worth it anymore. They have very few AP courses and you are forced to take those AP courses even if they may not at all benefit you. The AIMS PE program is absolutely wonderful (Shoutout to the sensei’s those guys made me a better person) with a focus on martial arts and strength training. Definitely not your traditional PE program but it improves mental and physical toughness and teaches how to keep a scientific logbook. Besides their PE program AIMS is, while a better New Mexico school, nothing all that special. As an ex student who had to leave for various reasons, I would recommend for middle school. Just expect your kids to come back home with a superiority complex.
In my experience, AIMS was an average school. Some of the teachers are absolutely amazing while others are not so much. While the curriculum is advanced, in my experience we were oftentimes rushed through it to make sure we would be “ahead” (for example, pre calc and algebra II in the same year). The PE program is a true standout and taught me much more about life and myself than any other experience. I wish there were more opportunities to explore your passions and the school doesn’t guide you on how to create a strong cv or inform you of opportunities in the area. The school also doesn’t provide lunches in any way (no catering service when I left) and the facilities are lacking. Overall, I am glad I went to AIMS as I could not imagine myself having attended any other school for my U.S. high school experience. However, it is most definitely not the school for everyone and ultimately I ended up leaving for a better educational opportunity before graduating.
AIMS is an interesting school is the easiest way to put it. The school itself is middle school and high school, yet holds about 600-800ish students. The faculty are close-knit, since it is so tiny, and the students practically stick with the same classmates they met in 6th grade. The academic course is excellent for those who wish to attend UNM afterward since the school is chartered by UNM, as you are required to take 30 college credit hours on top of your high school learning. The course load is best put manageable and is best for those who hold their academics higher than their extra-curricular activities. As it is free and requires you to help out with community service per semester, rigorous science fair and Rube Goldberg competitions, and college classes during high school, it is a niche for students who are willing to go through it, and also comply with dress code.
