Alaska Middle College brings highschool kids from all over the Anchorage school district who want to get a boost in college. One of my favorite parts about this school is the work environment. Overall, the students here are more positive, mature, and hardworking, creating a more encouraging and motivating atmosphere than many highschools in the area. Also, the flexibility and autonomy is terrific. A student can take their college classes in the morning, go to their home school for other classes if they like, and finish off the day with any sports or clubs at their home school.
As great as all that is, the best part of AMCS is knowing your time is not being wasted. You only spend two or three hours a day in class, the rest of your day is yours to divvy up as you will, and you have a head start in your college career!

The Alaska Middle College School provides students with the unique opportunity to take college courses and earn college credit while still in high school. If a student is to earn 60 college credits (with the required courses by the Mat-Su College) within 2 years, they also receive their Associates Degree upon graduating high school. If a student participates in extra-curricular activities that the Alaska Middle College School does not provide (JROTC, certain sports and clubs, etc...), the student can still continue the activity with their 'home school' or the high school that they originally came from. This type of duel enrollment system truly offers the best of both worlds.
Alaska Middle College School is an amazing program designed for high school juniors and seniors from the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. The school allows dedicated students to work on their undergraduate degree through UAA while still in high school. Tuition, fees, and books are paid for through the school district, essentially giving the approximate 150 students currently attending a full ride scholarship. The teachers are amazing, the students are driven, and the school as a whole is worth the work.
