Alabama School of Fine Arts offers an advanced high school diploma with deep-dive specialty instruction. Students qualify via application to enroll in 1 of 6 intensive programs: creative writing, dance, math-science, music, theatre arts, and visual arts. Boarding is provided for students living outside of Birmingham.

ASFA students are set up for success with a full-time college counselor. The Class of 2022 earned approximately $8.6 million in scholarships and awards. 97% of ASFA seniors were awarded merit scholarships compared to the national average of 15%.

Alums include Suzanne Collins (author of the Hunger Games), Laverne Cox (Emmy-nominated actress and advocate), Ajiona Alexus (Black Mafia Family, Empire, 13 Reasons Why).

Faculty include Wes Chapman (former principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre & Alabama Ballet director), Ashley M. Jones (Alabama’s Poet Laureate, author of five books), & Alex Fokkens (Artistic Director and CEO of the Free State Symphony Orchestra).

The Alabama School of Fine Arts has six specialties available for study: Music, Theater, Creative Writing, Visual Arts, Dance, and Math-Science. An applicant must apply and audition for whichever specialty they choose. I am a Music student and as such, can only speak on the education given by the music and the academic faculty. There is a Music Hall with thirteen practice rooms, each equipped with a piano. Our classes consist of the choir, orchestra, ensembles, music theory, aural training, and the jazz band. I feel I have learned much that will prepare me for a musical career. The academic curriculum is rigorous but the teachers still find a way to keep the content uniquely interesting. The school requires focus and a passion for your specialty. Sometimes, the pressure and amount of work can overwhelm but friends can take the edge off. It is easy to make friends as there is such a diverse student body, you are bound to find someone with similar interests. Overall, a good school.

ASFA is a tuition free. Celebrates diversity and inclusion! Study any of the following specialties: music, dance, theater, visual art, creative writing, or math/science. ASFA also has dorm options for students.

It is a wonderful school where students can go to not only get a renowned arts education but as well academic education. This school has 6 different specialty areas dance, theatre, visual arts, creative writing, music, and math and science. It is such a wonderful place that works amazing for anyone and its a free public school! As well as if you live in a different state the school has an excellent dormitory.
