Coursework is challenging, but the academy provides plenty of resources and support. First two years are high school AP and Honors classes exclusively, next 2 are fully dual enrolled at USCA, received high school and college credit for those classes. Large involvement in community, learning, and USCA. Student body is incredible. 50 students are selected from the district, and the selection is very competitive, but also worth it. The school provides resources for applying to college, and many students are also eligible for USCA awards and Honors Societies. The school also provides many opportunities to connect with other classes within the school and provides many opportunities for clubs, which are sometimes student lead.
The teachers were willing to go above and beyond to make sure I understood what I was learning. They also offered tutoring and help after school and at lunch if they were free. The school places you in accelerated and AP classes during your freshmen and sophomore years. After your sophomore year, you are entered into 4 classes at University of South Carolina - Aiken per semester for free, which they share a campus with. These classes count as high school and college credit and allow you to save time and money on college after graduation. Aiken Scholars Academy prepares you for high school and enrolls you in it, placing you ahead of peers from other schools in the county.
The Aiken Scholars Academy is definitely a neat opportunity, but it does require a certain level of commitment. This school gives students the opportunity to take more AP classes than allowed at other high schools and it entails dual enrollment at USCA for juniors and seniors. This means that students get two whole years of "free" college (the school district-USCA partnership covers all tuition and book costs). This allows students in ACPSD to get ahead on their college degree before officially graduating high school. This also saves a lot of money. Students complete all (or almost all) of their high school requirements in the first two years. This puts a lot of pressure on students and requires a lot of time (4+ hours) of homework and studying in addition to the regular school day. If you want to take a variety of extracurricular classes in high school such as music, art, physical education, etc., ASA is not for you. You do not get to pick your classes freshman or sophomore year.
